seems I've read they start to show problems around 100K miles and then one problems leads to another-constantly chasing down micro-leaks. IMO-the Coolant systems "suck" (poor design) on the e-46. angry at myself for not DIY on that one cause its easy to replace fan on the manual tranny e46 with parts on line at about $80Ĭonstantly chasing micro-leaks in the system, topping off coolant, replacing temp sensors, replaced thermocouple/thermostat, almost all coolant sensors on coolant lines and system, The bottle crack was a symptom of The fan motor not operating at idle-thus the system would get too hot if I did not drive it but left the car idle for 15 to 20 mins. I replaced it myself, some of the hose connection / reconnection were a bittch to remove and replace, suggest replacing all connecting hoses when changing reservoir bottle. Hi temp Glass filled Nylon-(under designed imo) In essence this is a fail safe built in order to prevent any chance of even momentary overheating. This is a common problem, can only see it "weeping" when engine is hot and crack on the bottle is under pressure from boiling coolant, the bottle is supposedly HT PA66 GF. Restarting the car can make it go away since the engine itself hasnt overheated, but once the car cranks back up to 100 and notices temperature continuing to increase, itll drop back into limp. Please note: This guide covers every single possible symbol/warning light for ALL model variations for BMW 5. This will assist in troubleshooting, diagnosing and solving common automotive problems with this specific car. It seems that i have an issue which i didn't realize that before as when the low indicator came on and i went to dealership they kinda brushed it off and topped it off.which i've done at least twice now.I have had so many coolant system issues on my E46 Manual trans 2000 323i (108K miles)ġst was a hairline crack in the reservoir fill bottle, the crack was on the left front radius corner looking down from the top (direction of crack was top to bottom) was about 3/4" long. Welcome to the ultimate guide to all dashboard symbols, warning lights, errors and faults for the 2001 to 2024 BMW 5 Series. dealer is about 10 minutes and i can go during lunch time. Should i take the car to the dealer tomorrow to top it with BMW fluids? or i will be OK waiting til wednesday as long as i don't get the indicator again? i put two bottles of water in the car just in case i need to refill and i can monitor the oil pressure gauge. i topped with a bottle of water and cranked it and i couldn't see the low coolant level when i started the car. I am planning to drop the car Wednesday after work since because i don't have a loaner and my wife is not working thursday/friday so i can borrow hers. when i parked on the street i didn't see any spots, only when i am on the elevated driveway.i am thinking i've had some leak prior to having the indy shop do maintenance work but he said if its something we did we will cover it for free.that is still TBD.Īnyways, i checked my coolant level by opening the compartment and it very low, i couldn't see any fluids in there. i took it to the indy shop and said to bring it back in a few days to leave the car with him to investigate further. I had my car serviced at an indy shop two weeks ago and after that i've noticed when i parked in my driveway ( elevated from street level) i noticed a round spot of coolant ( i thought it was oil initially). i've seen it twice before and i've topped it from the dealer for free those times. its not the 'first' time i see the light. In a similar situation with low coolant light. But there's a big difference between gliding to the side of the road and gliding to the earth, and that's why a lot of people don't spend money they don't "have to". If my BMW were an airplane, I'd do the preventive maintenance and so would most drivers. For most people that is an expense they are not willing to pay unless there is a current problem, not a potential problem. I agree with Miller that if you want to be sure of minimizing problem potential, then replace the stat at 60 and the rad at 100. But is that a good idea? Would I get into one of these cars and leave for the West Coast. Shockingly, some have original hoses and thermostats. I have many BMWs with well over 200K miles and the original radiator. Any performance car is going to have to have its cooling system in good shape to avoid overheating. Since horsepower is nothing more than heat, the more HP you have, the more heat you have to remove. If a leak develops due to age or abuse, or the system is neglected then problems with overheating can occur. The components are as good or better than the competition. My experience is that the cooling system design is adequate for proper engine cooling.
